David Duval played quite a bit of golf at Timuquana Country Club – so much that it was hard to guess.
After playing in the Constellation Furyk & Friends PGA Tour Champions pro-am, Duval said that “Everyday” was his answer. It was different days. Some days it was 36 holes, others it was 45, others it was nine and some days it reached 54. It’s hard to keep track of it all.
Duval was the son Timuquana’s head pro Bob Duval. He learned the game from his father until he was 15 years old, when Bob Duval took the same job at Ponte Vedra.
Duval made the tree-lined fairways, plush push-up greens his proving ground for a successful career.
He won the U.S. Open. He won the U.S. Junior Boys.
Duval is currently in his first season as a PGA Tour Champion and is giving it a serious shot. He has played in 19 of 22 events, and is currently 81st on our money list.
Duval stated that he thinks only about the competition and remembering how to play. He was referring to the fact he hasn’t won on PGA Tour since his British Open win at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. “I have tried to be patient. Although things have improved, the scores don’t reflect my playing style.
Duval was overcome by nostalgia as he stood on the porch of the Timuquana clubhouse with its breathtaking view of downtown Jacksonville and the St. Johns River.
He said that he was proud to call the place his home, and was proud to have seen how many renovations had been done since becoming a professional. It’s simply amazing.
Duval didn’t just have a golf memory. After a hard day on the course, Duval enjoyed hot dogs and cheeseburgers at his pool. He also had a lot of fun with his friends swimming in the river to get to the Florida Yacht Club, which was a few hundred yards away.
Duval stated, “All the stupid things you do.” “But it’s possible to forget how beautiful it could be here.”
Duval said that he is still grateful to Timuquana for their kindness when his father, who was 15 at the time, left Ponte Vedra for Ponte Vedra.
He said, “They told me, David, you can come out and practice, play, and do all those other things,” he added. “It was cool to have a membership that did this for the son of a pro golfer who had just left another job. It was something I will never forget.”
The club has not. A replica of the Claret Jug Duval, which was won at the British Open, is displayed in a display case.
He said that he may feel some butterflies this week.
He said, “It’s thrilling… it certainly can be nerve-wracking.”
