After the holiday break, PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf returns for its first of eight tournaments. The segment begins this week with the Sanderson Farms Championship, and ends with The RSM Classic on November 17-20. The RSM will also mark the end of Segment 1 as well as the first phase in the Korn Ferry Tour graduate category reshuffle. It’s also the last portion of the wraparound season. RELATED: Horses For Courses, Statistically Speaking Drawings and Fades were published during the Presidents Cup week. If you didn’t see it, you can excuse yourself. I used the open mic to discuss the effects of the revised scoring system in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf at The Fortinet Championship. Click or tap here to see it. There will be more competition this season, with higher fantasy totals. Inflation increases the risk and reward dynamic of fantasy. It is our responsibility to manage that risk. Too much risk means too little success, but we will be able to make cuts and hang up four numbers regardless of who wins in the final round. You can still plan for the future, but neither THE CJ CUP at South Carolina nor ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP will be cut. These fields won’t be consolidated for several weeks but the 60 top FedExCup Playoffs eligibility points will automatically be exempt. It doesn’t necessarily mean all players will compete. However, knowing that you can rely on notables over a two week stretch of time without having to swallow zeroes should influence your decision to roster Sahith Theegala in Mississippi. Even if he wins one of the limited field invitationals, the overall points he scores in both events will offset the loss if your opponent connects. You can read the Draws and Fades link above if you aren’t following what I’ve just said. This explains why fantasy scoring is distributed more evenly with pars being worth one point. POWER RANKINGS WILD CREDIT Chris Kirk (-110 to a Top 40)…. Although I haven’t ranked a non-winner at the top of most Power Rankings, this week’s is an exception. For readers who have been asking about it, I’ve frequently referred back to the 2011 edition. Kirk was then ranked No. Kirk sat No. 1 in what became the Viking Classic. He was a rookie on the PGA TOUR and a non-winner. He won. Since then, he’s won seven more times. He has cashed in six of them but not for the top 30, since his distant T2 in 2016. Note the decline in the projection. Since last year’s T35, he has converted 11 top-40 finishes at individual competition. DRAWS Seamus power (-125 for Top 40)… He has only played four times in the past three months so he isn’t tired but not exhausted. He is a product of Ireland, East Tennessee State. He has had some success at Country Club of Jackson. A pair of top 20s contributed to his 3-for-5 record. He’s a good enough player to never feel worried about a prolonged slump, no matter what reason. He’s 35 years old, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he doesn’t deliver as many times for us. Peter Malnati (+200 to a Top 40)… It will be difficult to find the right use, if any. In 2015, he won the title and was the runner up in 2020. These successes are a culmination of six consecutive paydays. However, he is almost never the center of short-term considerations. He’s a great player, and he has been one of the most unpredictable players in real-time. Christiaan Bezuidenhout (-170 for a Top 40)…. Nobody played as many matches as his two matches at Presidents Cup. It’s curious to see if he was slow in his tournament debut in Mississippi. He also played his first live action in over a month. He is the most popular cut, and he also recorded 10 top 40s for individual competition in the 2022 section of last season. This makes him a worthy target. Although it would be a good idea to add him to your DFS, he is a much more popular name these days so the ownership percentages will be high. Justin Suh (+110 for Top 40)… A huge letdown at Fortinet. Although it is harsh, it also shows the difficulty of elevating. Keep the faith, he’s earned that equity. But, just because he seems convincing, it doesn’t mean that we don’t know if he will be a horse, or a hoss. Keegan Bradley Will Gordon Nick Hardy Mackenzie Hughes Russell Knox Robby shelton Kevin Streelman Odds sourced Tuesday, September 27, 2017 at 7:07 p.m. ET. ET. There have been many cautionary tales about players who reached the promised land but then struggled to regain traction the next season. They are aware of who they are, and fantasy owners of these guys know too. Although he doesn’t plan to fall into oblivion, he is 0-for-4 at CC of Jackson and has a 72-scoring average. This is good for a course that isn’t very impressive. He will take his time but his 2022-23 schedule will be the most interesting. Although he has been a busy man, it makes sense for him to now focus on the stops that are most rewarding and comfortable. Gary Woodland… You already know his long-term value. He missed the cut in his debut at this event last year, and has only connected for one top 25 in 10 of his last starts. Ryan Armour… He made it through here in 2017, but this is his only top 45 finish in three paydays. He has also missed five consecutive cuts on the PGA TOUR. His perspective and wisdom are admirable, but he is not for fantasy gamers with weak hearts. Brendon Todd… It’s an exception until it’s a pattern, but it strengthens the takeaway when the trend is itself an anomaly. At CC of Jackson, he’s 0-for-5. Although he missed three cuts during his career nadir the first two were a mistake, any yield he makes is a bonus. This means that he is also the ultimate contrarian for investors who enjoy the speculative. Joel Dahmen… Statistically, Joel checks all the boxes, especially from the tee-to-green and even lightly in par-5 scoring. But the cult hero is 1-for-5 with the Wyndham T81 in the last three month. In three attempts at CC Jackson, none of his paydays resulted in a top 50. Lucas Glover C.T. Pan Chez Reavie C.T. He is only available as a complement to deep full-season rosters and as a DFS flier in fractional considerations. NOTEABLE WDs Sebastian Muoz… CC Jackson was the venue of his PGA TOUR win in 2019. He’s been a loyalist to this tournament but it’s understandable that he needs a break after the stress of last week’s Presidents Cup, where he won three matches in a losing cause. Cameron Champ… His only return trip since his 2018 PGA TOUR title was to defend his title (T28), so it was somewhat surprising that he was able to commit in the first place. This season opened with a miss cut at Silverado. Danny Lee… This would be his first visit to CC of Jackson since 2014. Recently, he missed several weeks due to a sore hip. However, he returned in the Playoffs and was not selected for the first leg. This season opened with the same result at Fortinet. It’s one thing for someone to play (or attempt to play) through an injury while their status is locked up. But now that he has a reset for 2022-23, it’s less likely that he will push it too hard. If the sky is falling, each start would result in him losing one of his medical extensions, if any, starting next season. He has no reason not to compete until he is as close as possible to 100 percent.
