Dustin Johnson reportedly slammed the PGA Tour, specifically Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, after his 4 Aces team won the team portion at LIV Golf Adelaide in Adelaide on Sunday.
We don’t care what he thinks. Johnson said to the Australian Associated Press that he knew how he felt about us.
David Winkle, CEO and President Hambric Sports who represents Johnson and other golfers like Brooks Koepka, Scott Scheffler and Brooks Koepka, sent an e-mail to over 20 journalists covering the sport on Monday claiming that it was a “false quote”.
Dustin, who was visiting from Singapore, denied that he had made any such statements. Winkle wrote that he elaborated, saying his real answer to the question was “no comments,” but noted that other interviewees may have given different answers. “Dustin is grateful for his experience on the PGA Tour, and has the utmost regard for Commissioner Monahan,” Winkle wrote.
Johnson resigned from the PGA Tour in June, after reportedly signing a $100 million deal to join LIV Golf. Johnson, who is one of the many former Tour stars to join the breakaway circuit, has not criticized the circuit that made him a golf star. Johnson went 5-0 for Team USA at the Ryder Cup and is the most likely LIV player to be selected to the U.S. Team that will try to retain the Cup in foreign soil later this season if LIV golfers are selected.
The email did not mention that Johnson had walked back his comments about Talor Gooch who was a former 4 Aces Teammate and moved to the RangeGoats, where he won the individual title.
“Well, yeah. I didn’t really want him to win.” Johnson told the media that he never wanted any other team to be victorious than his. “Yeah I do like Talor. He did well for us last season, and he certainly played well this week.” But yes, I am glad we snipped Talor, to be sure, to give him a bit more.
