Golf Saudi’s head retracted comments that he had made to a reporter about how he would “celebrate” if LIV Golf players were not allowed to compete in the majors. He even said that he would create his own majors for his players.
It doesn’t sound outlandish if it does to you. Majed Al-Sorour, the CEO of Golf Saudi, made comments in this week’s New Yorker. They were widely criticised. You should read the whole story, but this is the section that focuses on the majors.
Rumours circulated that LIV players might be banned by the Masters. Sorour stated that the majors were siding with the Tour at the moment. “If the majors don’t want our players to play? I will celebrate. I will celebrate.
Sorour issued a statement on Thursday evening that said that the conversation was real and that it was not off the record.
His statement stated that he had a conversation with a New Yorker reporter about LIV’s Boston event a few months ago. During which I vented my frustration at LIV Golf players being blackballed by the PGA Tour. I have the greatest respect for majors and tournaments that are not affiliated with LIV when it comes to majors. Majors are about history and heritage. They also represent honor.
“The story misrepresented and wrongly expressed my views. Despite the suspension by the PGA Tour of our players, the majors are the best platform for LIV golfers to compete with other tour golfers. As a LIV Golf board director and member, I’m here to fulfill the strategic direction of the LIV Golf investment chairman. This includes building a team, expanding the game, and protecting player rights. This is my sole interest.

This upstart league, which is opposed to the PGA Tour, has been long criticized for being a way for Saudi Arabia to “sportswash its human rights record”. Next week, the final eight LIV Golf events are scheduled at Trump Doral in Miami. They consist of 54 holes and offer guaranteed money and no cuts for 48 players.
