Henrik Stenson was the European Ryder Cup captain in March. The DP World Tour announced that he was relieved of his duties immediately. Stenson will likely join LIV Golf as soon as possible.
“In light of Henrik’s personal decisions, it has become obvious that he will no longer be able fulfill certain contractual obligations to Ryder Cup Europe which he had previously committed to before his announcement as Captain on Tuesday March 15, 2022. It is therefore impossible for him to continue the role of Captain,” DP World Tour stated in a press release.
Although Stenson (46) had been associated with LIV Golf for several weeks, he changed his mind after Phil Mickelson’s incendiary comments last year. This seemed to delay the launch of the rival league. Stenson was committed to the Ryder Cup captaincy, and even made a first visit to Rome to start planning for the job. LIV launched in June, and will host its third invitation next Wednesday in New Jersey. It has offered huge guaranteed contracts to lure stars like Dustin Johnson, Bryson deChambeau and Dustin Johnson to the U.S. Ryder Cup, as well as European stars Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood to join its ranks. Stenson, a former British Open champion, has fallen to No. 171 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
The release stated that confirmation of the 2023 European Ryder Cup will take place “in due course”.
Ryder Cup Europe won’t comment on the matter until Stenson is replaced.
The 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, Rome, Italy will be held from Sept. 25 through Oct. 1, 2023.
Zach Johnson was the previous captain of the U.S. team. With a score of 19-9, the Americans won the Ryder Cup in Whistling Straits, Wisconsin in September.
