LOS ANGELES – Something Johnny Miller said in the past week has set up the final round on Sunday of the U.S. Open, where golfers Rickie McIlroy, Wyndham, and Rory are all in contention to win the major championship.
Miller, a Hall of Fame golfer and popular golf commentator who has been honored by the United States Golf Association with the Bob Jones Award - the highest award - was in attendance to accept this honor. He spoke at a press conference about his achievements as a broadcaster over the past three decades.
Miller stated, "I believed the greatness of the game is the choke factor." I don't mind if it's for a $5 Nassau, a milkshake, or anything else. Golf is about making that winning putt. To ignore this is to miss the best part of golf.
No one wanted to discuss it.
U.S. How to watch
Miller spoke a lot of the choke factor. Miller loves to talk about this subject, and the final round of 123rd U.S. Open provides the perfect opportunity.
Why Rickie fowler could choke in U.S. Open Final Round
Fowler's good news is his words.
After his Saturday round, he told the reporters: "I am not afraid to fail." "I've handled that." "We're going to have some fun, keep trying to execute and leave everything out there. We will see how we do on 18."
Fowler isn't afraid to fail because he has survived challenges, including almost losing his PGA Tour Card last year. Fowler may be likable, but he still has the "choke factor".
Fowler is yet to win a major.
He has had a number of near misses in the past.
The U.S. Open was tied for second in 2014. The Championship Open 2014: Tied for second place. In 2014, tied for third place at the PGA Championship. Second place at the Masters in 2018
How can anyone be surprised if Fowler is still in contention when he heads to the final hole, but then reverts to his runner-up position?
Don't forget that he lost his one stroke lead on Saturday when he couldn't make a putt within 15 feet, and bogeyed the final hole.
Why Rory McIlroy could choke in the U.S. Open final?
McIlroy's words are the good news.
He told reporters that he was going to "try to execute a plan" after his round on Saturday. "And I feel like I've really, really executed this plan over the last three day." "I'm going out there to try to execute a game plan," he told reporters after his round Saturday. "And I feel like over the last three days I've executed that game plan really, really well."
McIlroy said this phrase many times over the past nine years. Since 2014, he hasn't won a major since the PGA Championship.
McIlroy, for the fifth consecutive year, will not be lower than seventh in the U.S. Open leaderboard. But he hasn't won.
McIlroy's performance at the Memorial Tournament two weeks earlier was even more alarming. He entered the final round of the tournament in a tie with three other players at 6-under. On Sunday, he shot 3-over-75 and tied for 7th.
Why Wyndham could choke in U.S. Open final?
Clark has good news to share.
He said: "I'm looking forward to tomorrow's challenge and I hope it's mine."
It's not the day for him, even though his attitude is admirable.
In May, he won the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour. In the six major championships he's played, his best result is tied for 76th – and he missed out on the 2023 PGA Championship.
Clark, 29 years old, has never performed on a stage of this size.
After his 1-under-69 on Saturday, he also was refreshingly honest in criticizing late tee time. Please name the last golfer who complained about the tee time the night before they won their first major.
What happens if all of them fail in the final round of U.S. Open?
This is what happens if Fowler Mcllroy Clark and all of them gag when under pressure.
Scottie Scheffler won the Masters 2022 with a three shot victory over McIlroy. She is currently the top-ranked golfer in the world.
On Saturday, he finished his 2-under-68 round with an eagle. Back-to-back hole had a clutch feel.
If Scheffler fails, Dustin Johnson is only five shots behind. He has won the U.S. Open in 2016 and the 2020 Masters, and tied for second place in three majors.
This is the 50th anniversary of Johnny Miller's final-round score of 63 in the 1973 U.S. Open. Miller, who had one of the best rounds in golfing history, beat John Schlee by one stroke with one of the most memorable rounds ever.
He also defeated the choke factor.
