LOS ANGELES - Johnny Miller has won 25 PGA Tour tournaments, including two majors. His last Tour victory was in 1994 at the Pebble Beach pro-am. He used Bobby Jones irons that day.
Miller, who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2013, received the Bob Jones Award 2023, the highest award given by the USGA in recognition of sportsmanship and character in golf.
Miller, who was 76 at the time, said that Jones "might have" been the greatest golfer to ever play. Miller spoke at a news conference held at Los Angeles Country Club in Los Angeles, where the U.S. Open is being played this week.
U.S. Open: Leaderboards, tee-times, hole-byhole
Miller stated Wednesday that "Jones was amazing." "He was incredible."
Jones' career can't be compared to that of Nicklaus, Woods or many other greats. Jones is a major figure in golf and the founder of Augusta National Golf Club. He was also the most successful amateur player of all time. Between 1924 and 1930, he won the U.S.
He was only 28 when he turned professional and had nine wins. Seven majors are credited to him, including four U.S. He has won seven majors, including four U.S.
Miller, winner of the 1973 U.S. Open as well as 1976 British Open, said: "I've always been a Bobby Jones fan." "I thought of him as a gentleman champion. It's a truly amazing person. "I was happy to receive that award, and honor him in a small way by saying, yes, I will be glad to do it even though I wasn't really into receiving more accolades or doing interviews."
Nicklaus holds the record with 18 major championships. He has won nearly 120 professional titles, including 73 PGA Tour wins.
Gary Player would probably not disagree with Miller. In April, he told the Palm Beach Post that Jones "might have been the best player to ever live." He used a walking-stick as a shaft and the ball went down 80 yards.
Player mentioned Nicklaus as well as Woods, Ben Hogan and Nicklaus.
"I would have to choose Jack."
