RIDGELAND (S.C.) – Phil Mickelson, to hear Jon Rahm say it, has lost the plot.
Rahm chuckled when Rahm was asked about Mickelson’s remarks advancing a theory about the PGA Tour trending downward. “I don’t really understand why he said that.”
Here’s what Mickelson said in Saudi Arabia last week during the LIV Golf event that Brooks Koepka won.
He said, “As I stated earlier, for a long and long time, my thirty years on the PGA Tour pretty much all of the best players played the PGA Tour for at least the last 20 years.” That will not be the case again. You have to choose a side going forward. It is up to you to decide which side you believe will be the most successful.
“And I believe that I am on the winning side in how professional golf will evolve and shape over the next few years. LIV has some of the most talented players in the world, while the PGA Tour boasts many of the top players around the globe. Both sides will continue to evolve and change until they have had a good conversation.
“I see LIV Golf trending upwards. I see the PGA Tour trending downwards. I love the side I’m on. I love the way I feel. It’s a great feeling to feel energized and excited to play and compete in golf. It’s a great experience. They treat us with respect.”
Tee times
Rahm noted that the Tour had made changes to ensure that all the best players are committed to playing in 13 events.
Rahm stated that there have been changes, but it does not necessarily mean that it’s going to go down. Rahm said, “I don’t really know why he said that.” Don’t know. “I don’t really know.”
If you score at home, that’s five “don’t knows”.
He said, “I believe there are some great changes being made.” “I don’t really know what made him say that.” (Make it six.
Rahm knows that he will be riding a heater into the CJ Cup at Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina. Rahm had a disappointing season, losing just one PGA Tour win at Vidanta’s Mexico Open. He fell from first to fifth in world rankings. Rahm finished T-2 at the BMW Championship. Rahm also won the Spanish Open two week ago. Rahm shot a pair final-round 62s at both of these events.
Rahm stated that he understood the strength of the field but that it was something that meant a lot to him. “It’s difficult sometimes to control myself in crowds and it can be hard to keep my head in the crowd,” Rahm said about his victory in his home country. It was a week that I can be proud of.
Rahm credits a minor tweak to his setup he made in August for improving his putting. He also pinpointed when his groove was rediscovered.
He said, “A lot of it is with putting confidence.” “I believe it was BMW, where I saw three putts go into the hole after 27 holes. My confidence returned and I played incredible for the next few events.”
Rahm also knows that playing in Spain back home is his most difficult week of the year. This will be his first start on the FedEx Cup’s fall portion 2022-23 schedule. (He has committed to participating in the Hero World Challenge in The Bahamas in December.
He said, “I can promise you next week that I won’t see a golf club.”
