GREENSBORO (N.C.) — Joohyung Kim, a 20-year old South Korean, announced his arrival at the PGA TOUR. He closed the Wyndham Championship on Sunday with a 9-under 61, which made him the second-youngest winner of the TOUR since World War II. Kim made a sprint of a marathon day due to storm delays. Kim finished the morning’s third round two shots behind the leader. He then shot 27 on his front nine to make the field follow him. The rest of the round was a complete slog. Kim was granted instant membership to the PGA TOUR and is now eligible for the FedExCup Playoffs, which begin next week. He is now No. He is 34 and will be playing in two Playoffs events. There is a good chance of him reaching the final at the TOUR Championship at East Lake. Sungjae im, who had seven holes to complete Sunday’s 54-hole lead, tied for second with John Huh (67) Kim is the first PGA TOUR champion born after 2000. Jordan Spieth was just 19 when he won his first TOUR victory, the John Deere Classic. Kim exclaimed, “I cannot believe it,” and added, “I didn’t know that golf was so stressful.” Kim, who opened the tournament on the 18th with a quadruple-bogey 8 and finished the week at 20 under 260 at Sedgefield Country Club, didn’t think it would be that way. Even those not playing, it was stressful enough. Justin Lower was the one who suffered the most, as he was on track to climb into the top125 of the FedExCup standings and earn a full card for next year. Lower missed his 60-foot birdie putt on the final hole. He missed a 6-foot par putt, which would have placed him in the top 125. As he walked away from the green, he realized he missed the putt to the right. “I don’t know what I’m thinking.” Lower stated that it was a pain to come up short. Rickie Fowler seemed out of luck on Friday when he failed to make the cut at No. 123. Fowler will be able to extend his season at least one week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship next Wednesday, despite the fact that many players fell on the weekend. Austin Smotherman (125) and Matt Wallace (124) were eliminated from the top 125. They both needed par on the last hole and made double bogey. Max McGreevy was the equivalent to No. 126 was tied for fifth place to move up to No. 104. Kim was the other, and he was not in the standings before he accepted membership after his win. Kim was No. 1 after a pair top 10 finishes, including third at the Scottish Open. 34. Kim, who goes by Tom because of his fascination with Thomas the Tank Engine as a child in the TV series Thomas & Friends — rose to No. 21 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia were younger to reach this high in the ranking. He did it in a similar manner to McIlroy’s 2010 win at the PGA TOUR, when he shot 62 in Quail Hollow. Kim made birdie putsts of 20 and 25 feet on the second hole and third. Then he followed that with a 12-foot birdie shot at No. 4 and an 8-foot eagle shot on No. 5, and an 18-foot birdie at the next hole. Two more birdies on the back nine gave him a 27. He was soon on his way. Kim missed one shot due to deep rough at No. 10. The outcome of the race was never in doubt. Kim can expect to be part the International team for next month’s Presidents Cup, along with her qualification for the FedExCup Playoffs.
