The PGA Tour could be making a pivotal decision regarding future plans for its schedule.
ESPN reported Wednesday that the Tour delayed previously announced plans to host a three-event series in which the best players of the game compete for $25 million purses. Instead, it shifted its focus to its newly announced 13 elevated tournaments. Jay Monahan, the commissioner of the Tour, made a series of announcements during his “State of the Tour”, address prior to last week’s season-ending Tour Championship. These included top players signing up for 20 events next season and his firm stance against LIV Golf players returning to the Tour.
After Golfweek had previously reported on the matter Aug. 1, the three-event series international series was announced. It would feature a limited field that included only the FedEx Cup standings’ top 50 players and no cuts. According to ESPN, the series could be held in the future. The Tour was concerned that the Tour’s global series might be too demanding for players who desire more offseason breaks.
Due to increased tournament purses as well as bonus pools, the 2022-23 schedule will boast record prize money. Only 70 players will be able to secure playing privileges for the 2024 season. The PGA Tour will return to a calendar-year format after the playoffs.
