WILMINGTON, Del. WILMINGTON, Del. – Rory McIlroy was tearing down Wilmington Country Club like he had been a member for decades. Then one bad swing ended the two-time FedExCup champion. It also drowned his golf balls. McIlroy was enjoying a cruising round in the afternoon wave at the BMW Championship, at six under through 14 hole. He looked nothing like the Memphis man who missed the cut a week back and everything like a man who spent his weekend at the course on a reconnaissance mission. McIlroy’s indecision and poor execution on the par-3 15th resulted in McIlroy crossing his 5-iron twice and sending it sailing into a waterhazard. He then three-putted for a third bogey after his shot from 25 feet from the hole’s drop zone. He signed for a 3-under-par 68 in the final wash up, knowing that it could have been worse but insisting that he would still take the positives from the round and push on. “I must take the positives. I still enjoyed a good round of golf. It was quite impressive to be three under this afternoon. He said that he had to reset tonight, forget about the swing on 15, and start again tomorrow. “I started really well, did some good things… but that one tee shot on 15 was the worst. “I felt like I had probably half of a club too much. So I was trying to hit like an over-the-water cut. I just double-crossed the ball and then compounded it by the three-putt. McIlroy is currently tied for 13th in the Playoff standings, but he believes that his best days are yet ahead as he seeks the FedExCup’s first three-time winner. “Knocked some more of the rust off… last Friday I turned like a 5-or 6-under into an 1-under, but that was just rust and I wasn’t as sharp as it should have been.” Today was a bit sharper, and I hope that will continue into next week. “I practiced hard the week before Memphis to get back into it, after having taken two weeks off following the Open. But there is a big difference between practicing at home, camping on the range, and actually playing golf. “I realized that I needed to play a few competitive rounds in Memphis last week just to get a feel for my game. Then, I came here early and started working on my game, before getting out on the course. “I’ve been out on the course almost every day since Saturday, playing with Harry and trying to get into that competitive mindset.
