No. World no. 1 Scottie Scheffler’s 5-under 65 at TOUR Championship has propelled him to short-priced favoritism and won the FedExCup with three rounds at East Lake Golf Club. Scheffler’s 10-under start was made possible by his top-seeding during the Playoffs. This gave him a two-shot advantage over Patrick Cantlay and a five-shot edge over Xander Schauffele. Scheffler’s 15 under total is only eight shots behind six other players. Scheffler is now at -135 with BetMGM Sportsbook, despite still having 54 holes to play. Scheffler started the week at +200 to win it, and he slowed down to -155 after a round which featured four birdies and an eagle. “When I’m out on the course, I just try to do my best and go out there. I don’t look at leaderboards or any other information. Scheffler stated that he is treating the event as a four-day event and will go out to try to win the tournament. Scheffler has a 57% chance of winning at this stage, according to data crunching. However, Scheffler’s nearest challenger is the most likely threat the Texan will face in the three days ahead. Scheffler lost to Schauffele after a 4-under-66 round. However, he was still able to reduce to +550 to win his FedExCup. Schauffele, a seven-time winner of the TOUR, has returned from four or more shots in five of his wins. He’s also an East Lake specialist. From 21 rounds, he now has a remarkable 67.24 average scoring average on the course. He has played under par in every round. Schauffele won 2017’s TOUR Championship, but he did not win the FedExCup under the old points format. He also finished in the 72-hole top 72 at East Lake last year, but was unable reel in the starting strokes lead of Patrick Cantlay. He is also the East Lake runner-up in 2020 and 2019. His career record stands at 58-under par. Scheffler might be the man who can catch him. After a 64 on Thursday, Matt Fitzpatrick, the U.S. Open champion, is now third at nine under. After getting out to +5000 in his round, the Englishman is now +1400 to be victorious. At eight under, Patrick Cantlay (70), the FedExCup champion (last start winner) and Joaquin Niemann (64), are tied for fourth. Cantlay now has a chance to be the FedExCup’s first repeat champion at +1600. Before a final hole eagle, he was +2500. Niemann has jumped to +3000 and is now at +10000 to be the top player on Sunday. This comes after a Thursday morning bogey. To move to seven under, the remaining eight players in the lead shot 67. PLAYERS and Open Champion Cameron Smith and South Korean Sungjae Im are all within eight shots of the lead. Rory McIlroy, two-time FedExCup winner, cannot afford to lose any ground in these days. Smith and Im are +3300 and +1800, respectively, but McIlroy is a greater threat at +1200. McIlroy began at +900, but his first tee shot was out of bounds. He then carded a triple bogey. He sat at +3300 after another dropped shot before his rollercoaster round reached new heights. McIlroy managed to score a triple and four bogeys, but McIlroy added an eagle as well as eight birdies for a chance of winning.
