RIDGELAND (S.C.) – A quiet Thursday afternoon in Bluffton, S.C. brought a pleasant surprise to shoppers at the PGA Tour Superstore. There was an Open Championship winner among the many golf balls, bags, drivers, and gadgets. Shane Lowry drove 26 miles to search for a new putter, after his gamer broke down on the ninth fairway of his first round. The putter was not broken out of anger. Lowry’s second shot on the ninth green was his best. He grabbed his putter out of a bag a little too abruptly and it fell to the ground. Lowry tried to flip it up by gently kicking beneath the shaft. Lowry, who had just shot 4-under 67 on Friday with his latest PGA Superstore purchase, said that he caught it right where graphite meets steel. “I was like, yeah! I had to pick Matt Fitzpatrick from the ground from laughing. It was fascinating.” Congaree Golf Club, a private club in the Carolina Lowcountry is about 45 minutes from Savannah. Hilton Head is approximately the same distance away. Odyssey, the company that makes the White Hot OG 2-ball Lowry uses, left the premises on Wednesday. However, Lowry called the PGA Superstore in Bluffton ahead of time to have a putter made. Beau Martin, Lowry’s caddie was the one who placed the order so the shop staff assumed that he would be there. Lowry, dressed in all golf gear and sporting his logos across his chest, joined his caddie for the putter purchase run. Lowry smiled and said that customers did a few double-takes. Lowry had fun filming at the register and then posting it on Twitter for all to see. It had over 230,000 views as of Friday afternoon. It was great banter. He was happy to have a familiar putter. He had already putted two holes using a lob wedge belly before Brian Moran, his agent, came to pick him up, took a bag from a member, and handed it to Lowry at the 11th hole. Congaree’s greens are some of the fastest in the world. Lowry stated that it was difficult to putt with a Scottie Cam blade that he had never tried before. He said, “It did okay.” Lowry shot 68 in the opening round. The 2019 Open Champion, who was born in the United States, didn’t receive a discount at PGA Tour Superstore. The putter Odyssey had for him cost $229.99, with an additional $29.99 to get a custom Traxion Pistol GT grip. Lowry was able to open his own shop by Friday’s close. Lowry had one Odyssey in his bag, along with the backup he purchased, and two to three additional Odyssey that had been shipped in his locker. Lowry couldn’t help but smile and shrug his shoulders. He said, “There’s always some,”
