Justin Thomas won May’s PGA Championship using a Scotty Cameron T5 Proto Tour Only putter. Thomas’ PGA Championship-winning putter was not only stamped with his initials, but also had an aluminum plate in the back cavity to adjust the sound and a “knuckle neck” design in the hosel section that modified the toe hang. Despite its proven success and undeniable coolness, the putter may be at risk of being benched at the BMW Championship. A package with a Scotty Cameron T5 Proto Tour Only custom Scotty Cameron putter arrived at Wilmington Country Club on Tuesday. It contained customizations for a 15-time PGA TOUR champion. The putter was undoubtedly custom-made for Thomas, with Thomas’ “JT” logo in the back cavity and his initials on the outer toe. Drew Page, Scotty Cameron’s player representative, was involved in fitting the putter and delivered it to Thomas before he played his Tuesday nine-hole practice round. Wait, Thomas wasn’t looking for a new putter. He was he? We can only speculate. Thomas was able to test out several Scotty Cameron T5 putters of different lengths during that session. Thomas was a 34.5-inch gamer, but wanted to test out the shorter 34-inch or 33.5-inch options. Page says that Thomas was not ready to change his putter at the Genesis. He eventually changed to the 34.5-inch Scotty Cameron he won at the PGA Championship. However, something was still not right about the putter length. Thomas desired his shoulders to be higher and his arms to rest in a more comfortable place to support his eyes. Thomas was happy with the modifications to the putter head, such as the knuckle neck and smoother face milling. He also wanted to revisit a shorter putter build. The 34-inch Scotty Cameron T5 Proto “JT” custom mallet putter was born. Thomas used the putter on his first day of seeing it. Page stated Tuesday that the JT-logoed new putter “just got shipped in this morning.” It actually started at the Genesis in February. Justin’s dad and John Graham, his putting coach, went over his setup positions and tried to help him get into a better, more consistent position to be able to repeat the stroke he wants to improve. He was actually using the Phantom 5.5, his favorite gamer (Scotty Cameron Phantom 5.5) that he won 13 events with. We had sent them in, one a half inch shorter than his gamer, which was 34 inches, and one an inch shorter at 33.5. He was simply trying to test and tweak what worked and what didn’t. He was not ready to make any changes that week. He putted well after that, almost as if he had scared the gamer, and put the matter on the back burner. It was brought up again a few months later and he worked on it with his gamer. He ended up switching to the Phantom 5 knuckleneck with which he won the PGA Championship. We were still trying to find something comfortable for him. So we went through putting videos and tried to get his shoulders to be more relaxed. He said that he won the PGA Championship once, but that was his gamer (putterhead). We wanted to go back and review it at a shorter time, so he did this week. This is his first day with the device, so we’ll see if it works in play.” Or is this a ploy by his PGA Championship-winning putter to make him perform better? Is he really going to switch? The answer to that question will be revealed on Thursday, when he plays in competition. You can find more from GolfWRX on Instagram here. Let’s first take a look to the “JT T5 Proto” in question. It features many new customizations. Page stated Tuesday that the new putter features Thomas’ logo inscribed into the back cavity of the aluminum plate, Scotty Cameron’s “cherry dots” on the face and back bumpers and Thomas’ initials on the outer toe. It also has a SuperStroke TRaxion Pistol GT tour grip.
