California’s early-season tour takes you from the Coachella Valley desert to the Pacific Ocean bluffs north of San Diego. As Torrey Pines Golf Club hosts the 56th consecutive season, the Farmers Insurance Open will be the first test of the bag. La Jolla is a joy, but it comes with the challenge of covering almost 7,800 yards of the South Course in three rounds. Although the North Course is easier than the South Course, it will offer 18 holes of scoring opportunities to increase the scorecard for those 65 or ties that make the South Course a weekend. It is not difficult to play the South Course. There are chances of a marine layer, cold temperatures, especially in the morning, and winds blowing from four directions during tournament play. This will not help with scoring. It is difficult to hit the tee from tight fairways. Over seeded with Rye Kikuyugrass, welcome the off-target tee ball shots and approach shots. It will be difficult to recover from the thick, lush rough around the green or on the approach. The Poa annua Greens are among the most difficult and slickest on TOUR. Keep your eyes on the ball until you get it out of the cup. Although the North Course doesn’t use ShotLink lasers, it offers a lot of birdie opportunities.
