During practice rounds on PGA TOUR, Mike Thomas is often seen alongside his son Justin. Mike is the father and swing coach for Justin, the FedExCup champion. He’s often seen with a wedge watching Justin’s swing. Mike’s club is a story that demonstrates the close bond between father and son. Mike would grab Justin’s wedges to distract him from the long hours of practice. But there was one problem. His son was irritated by the habit. Justin Thomas explained to GolfWRX that his son always needed a club from his bag. To be honest, I was annoyed that he wanted to chip with a club. He would always grab a 56 (degree wedge) or 60 (degree wedge). It was a constant battle to get the wedge from him, and it would happen every week. I will just carry an extra wedge. “This is your wedge, don’t touch my other ones.” That’s how it all began, they say. Justin gave Mike one of his Titleist Vokey S6 wedges in 2019. Mike still has the same club but it is a little different. Titleist’s Vokey wedge representative Aaron Dill – who is responsible for many of the genius wedge stampings at the PGA TOUR – has been creating important memories and events Justin and Mike have shared since the 2019 Genesis Invitational in Riviera. Mike stated, “They call it their walker.” It was stamped in LA, I believe. It reads ‘Meat Coma’. This is because we used to go to Baby Blue’s BBQ every summer in LA and ate our way through a meat coma. So AD, Aaron Dill, Vokey, and Titleist put meat coma there. He may have put ‘Meat Coma 2″ on there, too. Other stampings also mention tournaments using their trademarks. For example, ‘Milkshake Invitational for the Memorial Tournament presented By Workday’, which is well-known for its milkshakes at the Muirfield Village Clubhouse. Other memories include ‘COVID-19 Qarantine’ or ‘Raising Money For Kids’. Justin’s win was celebrated with ‘2022 PGA Championship’, where ‘Champion” is highlighted in a different colour. This is Mike’s favorite. Mike claims he doesn’t request a stamping but Dill will track him down at tournaments and update the wedge as necessary. The problem is that there’s one. The club is running out of space. Mike said that Dill has a great imagination. “He’ll somehow remember where Justin was. He’ll say, ‘OK. We have to put the Scottish Open and the British Open on there.’ Justin also finds joy in looking back on the memories. He says that he enjoys looking back at the past and finding joy in the present. The wedge is unique, but it has more stories than any other club on TOUR.
