Two weeks ago, International Team Captain Trevor Immelman praised South Korean golfer Tom Kim at the conclusion of Presidents Cup and declared that a star had been born.
Kim has shown that she is more than just living up to the hype, after shooting a final round 5-under 66 at TPC Summerlin Sunday to win in Las Vegas the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open.
Kim was 20 years old, 3 months, and 18 days. He became the second youngest player on the PGA Tour to win twice since Ralph Guldahl (1932). Kim is also the first player to win two PGA Tour titles before turning 21 since Tiger Woods 1996. Kim was also the first winner of Tour since Lee Trevino (1974) to complete 72 holes without a bogey (J.T. At the 2019 Wyndham Championship, Poston achieved this feat.
Kim, who was the Wyndham Champion winner in August, fought Patrick Cantlay until he made a triple-bogey at the last hole to wrap a three-stroke win. Kim won the Wyndham Championship in August, his second win on the PGA Tour. He posted a total of 72 holes at 24-under 260.
“I was very fortunate on the 18th. Kim stated, “I’m not going lie. Patrick played amazing, and it was an honour to battle with him. And to come out on the top, I feel very lucky.”
After Cantlay shot a 60 on Saturday, he and Kim shared the lead heading into the final round. Kim also shot 62, shooting his final 11 holes in 8 under on Saturday.
He drained a 30-foot birdie shot at No. To build a lead of two strokes, he shot No. 8 from 30 feet. Cantlay won in Vegas in 2017, and settled for third place in this event.
Cantlay was seeking his ninth Tour title and third win. “No lead is safe here because you can get so low and make so much birdies,” Cantlay said.
Cantlay achieved exactly that by making birdies at Nos. Kim tied at 22 under with 11 and 12. Kim responded with birdies at 13 & 14, which he walked in from 13 ft. Cantlay had to keep his feet on the ground, so he scored back-to-back birdies at Nos. To erase his deficit, he shot 15 and 16. Both players made par at 17. Cantlay, who was the leader in Strokes Gained Off the Tee for the week picked the worst time to hook a 3-wood from the 18 th Tee and into a bush. He attempted to hit the fairway sideways but couldn’t advance his ball so he was forced to take an inplayable.
Cantlay said, “I thought if it could be returned in the fairway I’d get a chance and I figured it would be worth the risk since I didn’t think that I’d have much of a chance getting it up-and down from the brush there.” “Obviously, the last hole is what makes the entire week kinda sour.”
Cantlay’s shot was his next one. It splashed into the water in front of the green. To tie Matthew NeSmith, he made triple bogey.
Kim played the par he needed, and continues to receive high praise from everyone, including his caddie. Joe Skovron has a lot of experience working with players who have high expectations. He was there for 13 years with Rickie Fowler, until he decided to part ways in August. He joined Kim at the Presidents Cup two week ago.
He has the ‘it’ factor. He wants the moment. He wants the big putt. After Kim’s Presidents Cup performance, Skovron stated that he wants it and can respond to it. He has the potential to do anything.
