LOS ANGELES – United States Golf Association CEO Mike Whan opened the governing body’s annual new conference in advance of the U.S. Open 2023 by wishing PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan a good day.
Whan said, “I hope you are watching this and that you feel better. Everyone at the USGA wishes a speedy recover,”
The PGA Tour announced on Tuesday that Monahan (53), is “recovering from a medical condition” and that, in his absence Chief Operating Officer Ron Price, and Executive Vice-President Tyler Dennis, would be leading the day-today operations. The Tour held a short meeting on Wednesday morning for its staff in the midst of a time of great uncertainty.
Dennis, who appeared on Golf Channel’s Live from the U.S. Open to discuss Monahan’s condition, said that there had been no other updates.
Dennis stated, “Our business is moving forward at full speed.” “All our priorities remain the same. Last week we made a major announcement and nothing has changed in this regard. We are working hard to reach definitive agreements. In the next few weeks and months, there will be lots of news about this subject.
“It is full steam ahead as a business. We are stronger than ever and focused on the future.”
The PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund partnered last week to create a global golf entity. Monahan (53), was thrust into the spotlight due to his comments made about LIV Golf which was funded by the PIF. The commissioner was also heavily criticized by 9/11 families.
Monahan began his career on the PGA Tour as a player in 2008. He was appointed the Tour’s fourth Commissioner, succeeding Tim Finchem, on January 1, 2017. Massachusetts native Monahan graduated from Trinity College, where he played golf for four years. In 1995, he earned a Master’s in Sport Management from UMass.
Seth Waugh, CEO of PGA of America, said in a press release that “our thoughts and prayers” were with Jay Monahan and his family, including wife Susan, PGA Tour Commissioner and friend of many. “He has dedicated so much time to our beautiful game and we wish him to quickly recover to health and to the game that we all love.”
