ROCHESTER (N.Y.) — The cut day is both a joyous and a sad event for the 156 players who began their race on Thursday, hoping to win the Wanamaker Trophy.
Tyrrell Hatton bounced back after an opening round 77 to post a 68 and the world’s No. Patrick Cantlay (74-67) has renewed confidence that he can continue to climb the leaderboard. Harold Varner III, who had a double-bogey on No. The 11th hole was a brilliant response. He finished with five consecutive threes, four of which were birdies. Now he is 1 over. Both the defending champion Justin Thomas, and Jordan Spieth who is attempting to complete his career Grand Slam by winning, needed to sink eight-foot putts in order to make the cut. They both did. All 76 golfers who shot 5-over-145 or higher made it to weekend.
The chase may be over for these men, but they are not happy. Two of them shot 80 while another had to make bogey on the last hole in order to get the weekend off. The bad news is that some of the world’s best golfers didn’t play their best this week.
