The PGA TOUR’s fall tour heads to Texas to play the final FedExCup contest in the 2022 section of the season for Cadence Bank Houston Open. The Houston Open will take place at Memorial Park Golf Course for the third consecutive season. This venue was completely redesigned by Tom Doak in 2019. This week’s conditions will be more difficult than in previous seasons. The winners of this event have been 10 under and 13-under respectively. DraftKings Fantasy Golf Lineups: PGA Tour $300K Pitch + Putt ($100K to 1st) STRATEGY. This week’s course layout has changed dramatically from previous events. Memorial Park Golf Course plays at 7,412 yards. This course is longer than the previous events and requires a solid all-round game. Jason Kokrak and Carlos Ortiz were the first winners of this venue. They both had great weeks ball-striking, but also relied heavily on high-end putting and, in Ortiz’s instance, scrambling. Memorial Park is a non-traditional par 70 course with five par 3, three par 5, and two par 5. This puts it in a category all its own on the PGA TOUR. The only comparable venue is the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Resort which hosts the Valspar Championship. It is interesting to note that the 2021 winner (Kokrak), was also the runner-up in Copperhead 2020. Although the par 5s at Memorial Park can be longer than others, they will still offer the best chance of birdie for any player throughout the week. Both of the past winners played the par-5s at 8 under-par for the week. Solid driving and long iron play are essential to score on those holes. Statistically, Memorial will place a greater emphasis on long-iron approach play and cooler weather this weekend. This means that the course may play longer than usual. This week, it is a good idea to emphasize both strokes gained approach stats as well as proximity stats starting at 175 yards. Recent form might not be as useful as it was for the previous events due to such drastic changes in conditions. Long-term tee to-green and around the-green stats can help us identify solid targets for fantasy purposes. This could be especially true for players who have not had great results this fall. GOLFERS TO MENTION Tony Finau ($10,000. Finau was in his first fall event and fell short of the cut. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Finau missed the cut due to the long break he took following the TOUR Championship. Finau will always be more at home on tougher courses, where his ability to hit the ball high from the rough and length are key advantages. Memorial Park is definitely more bomber-friendly than last week. Four-time PGA TOUR winner Finau leads the field in long term strokes gained tee-to-green stats. He also ranks surprising eighth in longterm around-the-green stats. In 2020, he finished 24th at the venue. Scottie Scheffler ($11,000.) is likely to be a popular target. This makes him a great pivot play to use in larger tournaments. Sahith Theegala ($9300) Theegala was close to winning multiple times in 2022. The 24-year-old was runner-up at Travelers and held the lead at Waste Management Phoenix Open in February. He is a skilled player who can handle tougher courses when they are in form. His finishes at the Memorial (T5) and Valspar (7th) would be proof of that. Memorial Park’s setup should be more similar to the tougher venues. The field will be competing in its third event in Texas in three weeks. However, Theegala is coming off a week of rest following a few events in South Carolina’s ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP, and The CJ CUP. These events required extensive travel. Some might be concerned about his T67 finish at The CJ CUP a few weeks back, but it was only three months ago in Japan that he shot a round-three 63 and shot a total of 10-under par. This player is ready to win and can be a good target for DraftKings this week at a low price. Gary Woodland ($7,000). Woodland’s recent form doesn’t look very good. The 2019 U.S. Open winner is currently in his third fall start and has not been able crack the top 50 in any of them. Woodland, who has struggled in easier conditions, will be seeing his potential come alive in this week’s fall tournament. It won’t surprise us that Woodland is scoring harder than in previous fall tournaments. Woodland is still ranked in the top 20 for strokes gained approach and tee to green. He also played well in Texas earlier in the season, playing at TPC San Antonio for Valero Texas Open. He is $7K cheaper than the average player, so it’s worth taking a chance this week to get an upside in big field tournaments on DraftKings.
