The final leg in the PGA TOUR’s autumn swing will head to St. Simons Island, Sea Island, this week for the RSM Classic. This annual event has been a staple on the wraparound portion since 2010. The tournament will use the Plantation Course, Seaside Course and Seaside Courses on Thursday and Friday. Weekend play is at the Seaside Course. DraftKings Fantasy Golf Lineups: PGA Tour $300K Pitch + Putt ($100K to $1st) STRATEGY. The venue is very different from Houston last week. A longer and more difficult course resulted in tougher scoring conditions than what we have seen for most of the fall. The Sea Island Courses are shorter than the PGA TOUR standard and have proven to be more successful with their players. With their short irons, the Sea Island Courses are known for being a clinical performer on the greens. The Plantation Course is a short par 72 course with four par 5,s. The Seaside Course, on the other hand, plays to the same yardage, but as a Par 70. This makes it slightly harder for scoring purposes. Par 4 scoring is important on the Seaside Course, as there are only 2 par 5s (par70 setup) and 12 par 4. In terms of efficiency stats, the key range is 400-450 yards as nine par 4s are within that range. This means that many short and mid-iron options will be available to players. It is important to look at golfers within 175 yards of the hole. The most popular approach ranges are between 125-175 yards. Seaside is open, and wind can be a major factor. Although the greens aren’t difficult to hit, wind can make them lower. Short games tend to be stressed at one point or another during the week. The scrambling rate at this event is still lower than the average, so players who have good short games and are comfortable working around shorter courses will be able to make it to this event every season. Webb Simpson, Kevin Kisner, and Chris Kirk are past winners of Sea Island. These three multi-time PGA TOUR winner have also enjoyed success at technical venues such as Waialae or Hilton Head throughout their careers. This week is a great opportunity to review course history and look at the results at similar venues when creating DraftKings daily fantasy-golf lineups. TO CONSIDER Tom Hoge ($9800) Hoge, who is entering this event following a missed cut in Mexico, has a solid fall swing and should not be overlooked. His one PGA TOUR victory was at Pebble Beach, a short venue on the coast. He ranks second in long-term form, and first in short term form in Strokes Gained; Approach stats. Hoge’s greatest strengths are his iron play. He ranks third in proximity stats between 125 and 150 yards. Hoge’s success at Sea Island has been evident throughout his career. He even reached contention in 2015, when he was struggling to find consistency. Hoge’s T4 season saw him improve his approach, putting and green skills by 4.4 strokes. After a few weeks of rest, he is a player who can put in a great performance at this smaller venue. Matthew NeSmith ($9,000). Matthew NeSmith is another player who brings solid momentum from his fall swing. American golfer Matthew NeSmith has been a top-10 finisher in four of five fall swing starts. He has also shown that he can play the elite approach game required to compete for a win. NeSmith has posted career-best third place at Valspar Championship and has gained more than five strokes with the approach since February. Although his other game isn’t as consistent as his peers, NeSmith has shown more confidence with his putter throughout the fall. He gained strokes with his flatstick in five of six starts. This South Carolina native is familiar with the area and will enjoy the slower Bermuda greens and change of venues that Seaside venues offer. In three of his career appearances, he has finished at least T29 in this event. He is an excellent mid-tier target to work around on DraftKings this week. Aaron Rai ($7800) Rai just finished a week at the Cadence Bank Houston Open where he was T7 and managed an astonishing 12.6 strokes on the putting greens and around the greens. It’s not an exaggeration to say Rai relied on his short-game to get him through, but Rai is showing some confidence in this section of his game as he enters a venue where elite short game specialists and putters have flourished in the past. He is expected to improve his iron play this week. In October, he gained seven strokes on approach at Shriners Children’s Open. Rai, a former DP World Tour champion, has made five out of six cuts in the fall and was T16 at this year’s event. This week, he is a solid value target at less than $8,000.
