Matt Fitzpatrick doesn’t lose any sleep over LIV Golf’s fight for supremacy on the PGA Tour.
Greg Norman’s upstart circuit, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, has broken the Tour and taken some of its best talent. It also includes three of the top seven players in the 2021 BMW Championship leaderboard. It’s now seven of the top 21 players, if you multiply that number.
It’s still an amazing field. Fitzpatrick stated that the field this week includes 70 of the most talented players in the world, ahead of the 2022 BMW Championship in Delaware. “Yeah, there are only three of them who aren’t here. It’s not a huge loss to me.”
The 27-year old hasn’t been too bothered by the most important story in professional golf for a while. He only sees the news.
He said, “You get tired of talking about it.” “My personal opinion is that it’s okay to just get on with the job. You just want to enjoy golf and focus on what you are doing.
Fitzpatrick knows that it is easier said than done. The Englishman has had 15 starts this season and finished inside the top 25, with 13 of his finishes in the top 25, and 10 within the top 10, which is tied with Justin Thomas for the most Tour wins. Fitzpatrick’s two-month-old U.S. Open win has not slowed him down. He finished T-6 at the loaded Genesis Scottish Open, and T-21 at Open Championship. The FedEx St. Jude Championship was the first leg of Playoffs.
He entered the week without ever having seen the course, and is tied for third at +500 with Justin Thomas (Patrick Cantlay), Scottie Scheffler, Will Zalatoris, and Scottie Scheffler.
“Thankfully, this year, I was guaranteed (a playoff slot) right from the beginning. Fitzpatrick said that it was quite nice in comparison to last year.
“I feel a little uneasy about that. If you have played well throughout the year, I believe you should be at the top of your game or right where you belong. The Playoffs could throw that out a bit, which I find a little strange.
Fitzpatrick’s coach was sending him scenarios where, had Sepp Straka won against Will Zalatoris in the playoff, he would have moved up to the top of the playoff standings. Both of them had a good time, especially after Fitzpatrick said, “I won U.S. Open so I’m fine.”
It is hard. He said that he was laughing at the fact that Collin Morikawa had such an amazing season and finished outside of the top 20 on FedEx. “And then, this year (Scottie Scheffler has won four times, (Cameron Smith has won three), and those seven events, they aren’t small events. They are among the top events in the world and are now behind (Will Zalatoris).
It’s not that I want to take it away from Will, but it seems a little too much. It’s a two-horse race and these two should have been running with it. Now there are more people in it, which I understand is the point of the Playoffs. It’s exciting. It’s a difficult one for players to be rewarded after a hard season.
He added, “I don’t believe it’s fair.” “But, life isn’t fair.”
