SPRINGFIELD (New Jersey) — At Baltusrol, some of the most prominent names in women’s golf headed home early. Nelly Korda, Atthaya Thtikul and others missed the cut in the first major women’s event held on the Lower Course since 1960.
Stacy Lewis, the Solheim Cup Captain who will be playing the weekend said: “You can hit the ball a little bit sideways from the tee. That’s the way it is on a course like this.”
It’s the constant chipping and getting up and down 100 yards.
Lexi Thompson was on the verge of missing the weekend when she fell outside the top 100 at the start of Friday’s round. But then, near the end, she roared back with four birdies in a row to sneak into the weekend at 4 over. Lewis, who has played less than Thompson and Korda this season, said that she would not have bet on either of them.
Korda had to take a month’s break due to an injury. Thompson, on the other hand, has only played five LPGA events so far this season. This includes the Hanwha International Crown.
Lewis said that he would encourage the players to play more tournaments before Solheim.
Here are some of those big names that failed to impress in a soggy Springfield.
