Sergio Garcia finished his T-68 finish at St. Andrews’ Open Championship. He was about to resign from his membership in the DP World Tour. This would have made him ineligible for 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy.
Garcia changed his mind about his future membership to the DP World Tour a few weeks later.
“But thanks to Jon Rahm’s words and the good conversations I had with the guys on the (DP World Tour), I decided to put off that. I’d like to see at least what happens when the Ryder Cup qualifier starts. Garcia told ESPN that Garcia wanted to see what rules and eligibility they had in place. “If they are correct, I will continue to play on the tour and attempt to qualify for the Ryder Cup team. We’ll continue if we don’t agree. It is something I have in my head.”
Keith Pelley, the CEO of DP World Tour, told me that he wanted to continue being a member on the DP World Tour. Garcia explained that he wants to continue playing his minimum and still support the tour. He also stated that he still has eligibility to be on Ryder Cup teams. He said that while it was great, we have to do the best for ourselves. We’ll find out what that is. ‘”
Sergio explains why he believes LIV Golf is ‘the future’ of golf.
The 42-year old Spaniard was among the first to resign from his PGA Tour membership in order to join Greg Norman’s LIV Golf Invitational Series. It is backed Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. LIV Golf will host its third event at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster later in the week.
Saudi Arabia is being accused of a wide range of human rights violations, including torture, forced disappearances, politically motivated killings, and inhumane treatment for prisoners. Saudi royals and the Saudi government were also accused of being involved in Jamal Khashoggi’s murder, a Washington Post columnist and journalist from Saudi Arabia.
Garcia stated that the rift between LIV and PGA has gotten “a bit sadder” with the ensuing bans and fines. Henrik was the victim of what they did. It’s a little sad.
Henrik Stenson, who had joined the upstart circuit, was stripped of his Ryder Cup captaincy. The 46-year old Swede will make his LIV debut at Bedminster.
“Henrik’s personal decisions have made it clear that he is unable to fulfill the contractual obligations to Ryder Cup Europe he had previously committed to before his announcement as Captain on Tuesday March 15, 2022. It has been stated by DP World Tour in a statement.
Stenson stated in a long Twitter statement that “the opportunity to play at LIV events moving forward” was something he wanted to experience.
Garcia, who has represented Europe in 10 Ryder Cups, holds a record of 25-13-7. He holds the record for Team Europe points scored (28.5), and is only one appearance behind Nick Faldo (11).
