NORTH PLAINS (Ore.) — The LIV Golf Invitational Series has many reasons why players chose to participate in this upstart league.
The answer that Sergio Garcia gave Wednesday at a press conference was “Sergio Garcia”, an 11-time PGA Tour and 16 time DP World Tour winner, who offered several reasons for his decision.
Garcia stated, “I did it because this is the future golf,” because it allows him to not only do what he loves, which is golf, but also to spend more time with his family and see them grow. I have a four-year old and a two year-old, so it’s great to see them grow. This is what I have been doing for 24 years. I travel a lot, make a good living, and it has paid off.
What is it that makes the 12-player, 48-player, 54-hole, no-cut, shotgun-start series so special to the 42-year old, and makes it the “future” of golf?
Simply put, it’s different.
After his news conference, Garcia said that “it brings something new to the game that hasn’t been had for a while.” He was joined by Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood. It’s almost impossible to find a tournament on tour that is similar, so it’s great to have something that brings together different concepts. You have the individual event but you also have the team event. This brings new relationships and focuses. It’s exciting for me both as a captain as well as LIV Golf player.
