Byeong Hun an (+400 for a Top 20)…. Some may not feel it was that long ago, but for him it feels like it has been a moment. He continued to play on the Korn Ferry Tour, gaining status in the major leagues and just in time to make his second appearance at the Lowcountry (T52) in the PGA TOUR season between editions. He opened this season by a Silverado T4 to remind him of his talent, so he’s back with momentum piggybacking. The 31-year old is also representing South Korea in the TOUR stop that places South Koreans in the spotlight. This week, he’s buoyed by national pride. J.J. Spaun (+350 to be in the Top 20)… A Breakthrough winner in San Antonio six-and-a half months ago, it is essentially an insult to bring him in here. But value is value. After the Valero Texas open coronation, Spaun fought for a while but has since found the form that gave him the career-defining experience. He’s won six of his seven starts and four times for a top 25. This includes the two last outings. He missed Congaree 2021 but the experience gave him an advantage on how to avoid making mistakes and where to make them. Luke List (+275 to get a Top 20)…. A second winner earlier in the year. When you consider the Farmers Insurance Open champion for any outcome it is best to lean into either one or the other. He relies on power and precision as any other player from the tee to the green. The hope is that he will push the putter as hard as he can. Congaree 2021 Congaree was a difficult week for him and 19 others. Course debutants need to be able to understand the subtleties and undulations of greens. This increases his skill set. It’s similar to Narashino’s last week, but on a shorter track. He led the field in measured drives (ShotLink was not used) and ranked T12 for greens hit. However, he placed second in putts per Greens Incredibly. He finished T29 with a final round 72, his best result in eight starts. Keith Mitchell… His active story can be traced back to the month that the PGA TOUR first came through town. He was at the Wells Fargo Championship, May 2021, when he got rid of the pressure to qualify for the Playoffs and kept his card. He’d missed the cut at Congaree’s Palmetto Championship, but he has a record of 11 top-15 finishes thanks to a balanced and strong bag. In the past 12 months, he has missed just three cuts in individual competition and one in Open Championship in his 11 previous starts. Alex Smalley… The Greensboro native and Duke University graduate has made a quiet and comfortable career as a professional touring on the largest stage. As a rookie, he advanced to the FedExCup Playoffs’ second leg. He has also opened 2022-23 as a professional with two paydays in three starts. This includes a T25 in Japan last week. He has already shown that he can improve his game, so he shouldn’t be playing behind the tee at the forgiving Congaree. These odds were calculated on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.
