This week, Tiger Woods and the TGR Foundation host the Hero World Challenge at Albany, Bahamas. Woods was expected to be part of the 20-man field in his first start since The 150th Open Championship, July. However, the 82-time PGA TOUR champion was forced to withdraw due to plantar fasciitis. Sepp Straka is the late call-up against elite talent. DraftKings Fantasy Golf Lineups: PGA Tour $300K Pitch + putt [$100K to first] STRATEGY Although the field is small with just 20 players, it features elite golfers from all over the world. The top 33 OWGR players are all in the field, which gives us plenty of options for fantasy golf. Both last year’s winner (Viktor Hovland) and runner up (Scottie Scheffler), are in the field. 2018 winner Jon Rahm also is in the field. He won twice this fall on the DP World Tour. Given the small field and guaranteed four rounds of play, every choice we make will have serious implications for our daily fantasy golf lineups. So be prepared for big swings as the week progresses. Albany is located near the ocean and has very little cover. The fairways are wide open, which tends to emphasize power. The course is designed to allow for lower scoring, even with strong winds from the ocean often disrupting play. In each of the five seasons that Albany has been playing, it has achieved a winning score of 18 under par or better. It is unique because Ernie Els, the venue’s designer, set Albany up to be more links-style. Els even compared it stylistically with St. Andrews. Rickie Fowler is a former champion. He has shown himself to be a great links player, but he doesn’t qualify for long hitter. Uniquely, the venue features five par 5s as well as five par 3s instead of the usual four on most par 72s. This makes it more shot-makers and takes away some of the benefits that longer drivers enjoy. If players are able to play with confidence and their approach, they can challenge the week’s shorter par 4s. Players will be in varying forms as the year draws to a close. However, strong approach play and green play have been key factors to the success of this event. You should look for players who are already experienced on the links and have shown proficiency in these areas. TO CONSIDER Justin Thomas ($10,000.) This week Thomas could make a good contrarian play in bigger field tournaments on DraftKings. He only participated in two events this fall, with his best result being a T40 at the CJ CUP in South Carolina. He won’t be able to make a lot of money on a week that costs $500 less to catch Jon Rahm. Or, you can choose to go more balanced and use players like Tony Finau ($9300) or Viktor Hovland ($8,700). Thomas finished in T5 at Albany last season, making him the 10th fastest finisher at this event. He should be keen to improve upon his career-best finish of 2022, even though he has only had a few starts since the TOUR Championship. He is also ranked first in the field’s around-the-green stats for the 50 rounds. He has enjoyed a lot of success at nonmainland PGA TOUR courses throughout his career, winning in South Korea, Hawaii, and Malaysia. Although his price is high, his upside is just as great as any of the top players in the field. This makes him an excellent contrarian play to build around in large field GPPs. Tommy Fleetwood (7,300). Fleetwood is an experienced links player and just won the DP World Tour in South Africa. Fleetwood, like Thomas, has an elite short game which should enable him to handle this venue when and if the wind picks up. Fleetwood also showed a lot of confidence in the putter, gaining strokes at the greens in six out of seven PGA TOUR starts. Fleetwood was a top-five finisher in The Open Championship in two years. He also performed well at Albany in 2017, his only invitation. He took a share in third place. It makes sense to use Fleetwood as a value play in this price range, given his recent form and past success on links venues. Collin Morikawa ($6,900). Even though he is in an elite field, Morikawa’s salary of less than $7000 stands out. Although he may have had a disappointing season, he finished in the top five at two major championships in 2022. He also did well in Mexico’s last fall start, where he took a 15th-place finish. Morikawa has also gained strokes around the green in his last two starts, which may be a sign of his improved iron play. He is currently ranked third in this field for strokes gained approach statistics over the past 50 rounds. Morikawa, a winner of the Open Championship, also won against an elite WGC field in Florida at the Concession Golf Course. Morikawa finished T5 at this venue/event last season. He comes into the week with more motivation than his peers, having gone the whole year without winning. He’s a fantastic value target for fantasy players at a price of less than $7,000 on DraftKings.
