This week, the PGA TOUR will host its second no-cut event in a series at THE CJ CUP in South Carolina. The event was held in Las Vegas the previous two seasons, but this year it will be moved to South Carolina and host venue Congaree Golf Club. This week’s field is limited to 78 players. All players get in four rounds. This is the first time that Congaree will host this event, but it’s not the only time it’s been held on the PGA TOUR. It was the host club for the 2021 Palmetto Championship. This event was added to the PGA TOUR schedule due to scheduling problems. Congaree measures 7,655 yards. It features Bermudagrass greens and is a long par-71. Tom Fazio is the designer. He has also worked on other notable venues such as Caves Valley, Conway Farms and last year’s Summit Club in Las Vegas. Congaree isn’t a challenging course. The week’s driving distance and accuracy were both well above the PGA TOUR averages. Congaree hosted the Palmetto in 2021. There was a lot of shorter players on the leaderboard that year. However, the course becomes more challenging as players get closer to the hole. The greens at Congaree had a 10% average three-putt percentage and were much harder than the average PGA TOUR stop. It was also very difficult to scramble here, as players converted saves an average of 56% of the time they were off the green. This was enough to make the winning score just 11-under. Seven players reached 10-under or better. With a better field and fall scheduling, we could expect more birdies. Although you shouldn’t discount the efforts of players off the tee, Congaree will place more pressure on iron and short games. If they are trending well in longer approaches stats (>175 yard) or around the green, don’t hesitate to roster them. Garrick Higgo, the eventual winner, and Doc Redman, the runner-up, finished outside of the top 30 in driving distance, but gained over 4.0 strokes each on approach. Scottie Scheffler ($10,000.) This week’s venue requires a more holistic approach. Who better to take on this challenge than the No. Scottie Scheffler is the No. 1 player in the world. Scheffler has shown that he is capable of handling any track. His mastery of Augusta at such a young age suggests that he will be able handle Congaree’s tricky setup on his first attempt. He shouldn’t be beaten by the bombers this week, with such straight fairways. His approach game and short game rank him first in Strokes Gained Tee-to Green stats for the past 50 rounds. Five of the seven top finishers at the Palmetto 2021 gained more than 8.0 strokes tee to green. Scheffler has averaged 7.0 strokes tee to green in his nine previous starts. This means that if Scheffler’s putter is on the course this week, it will almost certainly be in the mix. Scheffler, who is the third-most expensive player on DraftKings offers a great way to start lineups. Russell Henley ($7300) This week’s field is larger than in Japan so we can still get a lot of value from our fantasy golf lineups by dropping down to the $7K range. This event will see Russell Henley ranked first in Strokes Gained – Approach stats, and 12th in Around the Green stats for the 50 rounds. Congaree’s fairways are easy to hit and won’t place too much stress on Henley off the tee. Henley will also be able to use many mid-iron approaches, which is where his strengths lie. You should also consider rest. Henley did not make it to Japan last week, and has been playing a light schedule with only a miss at Sanderson Farms to add to his fall record. The 33-year old has finished T25 and then T3 at this event in the past two seasons. Henley’s switch to the South East and Bermuda greens, which is where he comes from, should be a positive move. Davis Riley ($6,900). For the lower price, I have no concerns about Davis Riley returning this week. He was not able to adjust to the course or time in Japan and he finished the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP at T67. His poor start to the week was not enough to make up for the fact that he finished the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in T67 with rounds of 67-68, which is just one shot less than Keegan Bradley’s winning round. Riley, another player from this region of the United States, should be thrilled to return to Bermuda greens. Three weeks ago, he finished a strong T19 at Sanderson Farms. The large fairways should help with his accuracy. Riley is very appealing at $7K this week, as it’s a no cut event. We won’t be hindered by a blowup round.
